Late 20th Century

The Late 20th Century period began with economic prosperity. As time passed, the U.S. became engaged in an escalating arms race with the Soviet Union. Our country battled the spread of communism in Cuba, Korea, and Vietnam. This period saw an increase in civil rights for more Americans. The Space Age put a man on the moon, and the Computer Age ushered in technological advances that changed the way we worked and lived. Scandals shook the White House in this period, with Richard Nixon’s Watergate and Bill Clinton’s impeachment. As the century came to a close, the Cold War was over, and the period ended as it began – with economic prosperity.
