In the presidential election of 2020, Americans elected the oldest president to be elected, and the first female vice president.

A record number of voters cast ballots in the 2020 election. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, more voters than ever before voted by mail-in ballot and early voting. The election was a contentious one, and continued to be so even after the results were certified. Outgoing President Trump claimed voter and election fraud, instilling doubt in the democratic process that climaxed with an insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6th, 2021.
